ZJA Zwarts & Jansma Architects, in collaboration with Ballast Nedam Parking, has won the tender for the bicycle parking Leidseplein in Amsterdam. The main focus of ZJA's design for the underground bicycle parking is to store bicycles safely, easily and comfortably. Moreover, proper lighting and the access of daylight contribute to a high level of social safety.
User-friendly bicycle parking
The design of the bicycle parking is characterized by visual tranquility and clarity. The shape, color and lighting create an attractive and user-friendly bicycle parking. The construction of the bicycle parking ensures that bicycles are no longer parked at street level, allowing more space for pedestrians on the square above.
Clear orientation
The brick wall of Blauw Jan, the work of art with the well-known lizards on the Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen, continues into the bicycle parking and guides the cyclist downstairs. The bicycle parking has two entrances; one for pedestrians and one for cyclists. The brick wall connects both entrances and also provides a clear underground orientation.
Images of lizards on the floor of the bicycle parking are a nod to the Blauw Jan work of art. They play a role in the clear orientation and guide the cyclist to the exit at the Leidseplein.
Redesign Leidseplein
The activities on the Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen are part of the renovation of the nearby Leidseplein that has been made car-free. The relocation of the taxi stand to the Leidsebridge and the construction of the underground bicycle parking will give pedestrians plenty of space.
