For months, work has progressed on the renovation of the roof structure of the AFAS stadium, the home base of AZ in Alkmaar. The highlight is the mega truss that will soon span the entire main building. Early this morning the mega truss with its enormous white arch construction was lifted into its place. The white giant truss, a design by the architectural studio ZJA ,will soon support the new stadium roof. The mega truss on the south-west side of the stadium will soon be visible from afar. Together with the white crane-like structures it will then form a real eye-catcher.
A new roof for AZ
In the design for the renovation of the roof for the AFAS stadium AZ, optimal use is made of the space in the stadium, resulting in a roof that is supported by a series of crane-like structures that stand outside the stadium. The new roof protrudes further into the stadium than the old one, offering supporters more protection against rain and wind.
The crowning glory
Whether the mega truss could be lifted remained exciting until the last moment, because this depended on the weather conditions. The installation of the giant truss is considered the crowning glory of the work on the new roof. Soon supporters will be able to enjoy a football match again in a safe, comfortable and modern stadium.
The renovation was made possible by AZ, ZJA, BAM, Royal HaskoningDHV, IGG Bouweconomie and the Stadium Consultancy.
The AZ website shows a photo and video report of the installation of the mega truss.
