Two projects by architectural studio ZJA have been shortlisted for the International Architecture Awards: the Diamond Exchange, Capital C Amsterdam and the Venue building in Middelkerke. The winners of this prestigious award will be announced on September 9th in Athens.
International Architecture Award
The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, and the Metropolitan Arts Press, Ltd., have been organizing the International Architecture Awards since 2004. The organizers intend the award to give all stakeholders and interested parties an important overview of the contemporary network of architects worldwide.
Diamond Exchange, Capital C Amsterdam
In 2019 the former Diamond Exchange was transformed into a centre for the creative industry called Capital C Amsterdam. To restore the qualities of the original design by Gerrit van Arkel, the historically important building underwent radical renovation by a design by ZJA in collaboration with Heyligers design + projects. It is now crowned with a parametrically designed dome of glass and steel called the High Light.
Venue building Middelkerke, Belgium
The first outlines of a new iconic building are emerging in Middelkerke. The venue building will be integrated into a renovated coastal dune landscape which rewrites the historical linkage between the bathe resort and the sea. In addition to reinforcing the sea embankment and making it car-free, designed by ZJA in collaboration with OZ, DELVA Landscape Architects, and Bureau Bouwtechniek as members of the Nautilus Constortium, the design also forms a part of a qualitatively improved public space where the boulevard and Epernay square are unified. The project is anticipated to be completed by late 2023.
