On Monday 19 September, Minister for the Environment Vivianne Heijnen gave the symbolic starting signal for the implementation of the PHS (High-Frequency Rail Transport Programme) at Amsterdam Central Station. After years of preparation, work in and around the station can now begin. In 2030, 275,000 passengers will be able to travel through this ‘railway cathedral’ daily. Work starts with the building of an uninterrupted crossing on the Dijksgracht. From late 2023 it will be the turn of the station itself.
More space for passengers
Currently 200,000 passengers use Amsterdam Central Station every day. To cope with the predicted growth in both traveller numbers and frequency of use, ProRail is working with the Amsterdam Municipality, the NS, engineering bureau Arcadis, Movares and team ZJA (architectural studio, Braaksma & Roos Architecturenbureau and IGG) on the modernization of the station, which will remain in use while the work takes place.
Visual coherence and a pleasant travelling experience
More space will be created in the station, for example by building additional staircases to the platforms and by widening the existing platforms and the East Tunnel. The creation of greater visual coherence in the interior will contribute to a less confusing and more pleasant experience for travellers. This historic building will look thoroughly rejuvenated.
